Learn About Rattan

Explore the Essence and Ambitions Behind Rattan Insights

At Urban Oak Indonesia, we’ve cherished rattan for generations. Many of our indoor furniture pieces are handcrafted from this beautiful, versatile material. But what makes rattan so special—and why do we love it so much?

Rattan is Not Bamboo

Rattan is often mistaken for bamboo, but the two are very different. Bamboo is hollow and rigid, making it difficult to bend. Rattan, on the other hand, is solid, which allows it to be steamed and shaped into a variety of forms. This solidity also makes rattan furniture incredibly durable—capable of lasting for generations.

There are over 600 varieties of rattan, but only around 40 are suitable for furniture production. At Urban Oak Indonesia, we work with the finest qualities, ensuring each piece meets our high standards of durability and beauty.

Processing Rattan

Rattan is simple to work with. After steaming for just 10–15 minutes, it can be shaped by hand using minimal tools. Our furniture is lovingly handmade, either in its natural “skin-on” form or stained and varnished using toxin-free finishes.

Rattan and Sustainability

Indonesia is home to 80% of the world’s rattan resources, conveniently close to our manufacturing facilities. In the local tradition, rattan is said to “hug the rainforest”—literally, as it grows around the trees, and figuratively, because its cultivation helps preserve the forest. No rainforest, no rattan.

Rattan regenerates quickly—within 5 to 7 years—making it one of the fastest-growing and most sustainable materials for furniture. Its long vines can reach up to 100 meters, absorb CO2, and produce up to 35% more oxygen than a tree. Best of all, rattan is harvested by hand, keeping the process eco-friendly and gentle on the environment.

Use and Maintenance

Rattan is naturally durable and resistant to heat, cold, moisture, and temperature changes. While ideal for indoor spaces, it can also be used in covered outdoor areas. It requires very little maintenance—just wipe with a hard-wrung cloth for everyday cleaning.

At Urban Oak Indonesia, rattan is more than a material—it’s a tradition of craftsmanship, sustainability, and timeless design.
